Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival
Date of Event : 5th Day of the 5th lunar month (8th June 2008)
Venue : Stanley Bay
Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival is held on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year. The Dragon Boat Race Festival memorializes the death of a famous scholar - Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in Mi Lo River more than 2,000 years ago to protest against corruptors. During this event, locals and tourists will shine a spotlight on the furious dragon boats racing bringing a combination of a fierce fast and vigorous spectacle. Traditionally, local people will throw rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves into the river so as to present the offering of sacrifices in Chinese Dragon Boat Festival in Hong Kong. Moreover, paddlers hit heavy drums hoping to keep the fish away from touching Qu Yuan’s body. Another highlight of this festival is elaborately decorated dragon boats.
